Merry Christmas!

Surprise! I'm still alive and well, it has been far too long since my last post, life has been good to me and is being good to me, been really busy. :)

Let's see, to update everyone as to what has been going on since I last posted, which was about my latest MP3 player, the verdict is in, I love it, I do wish the text on the screen could be enlarged, but I've used it long enough now to have the menu pretty much memorized so it's not such a struggle as it was in the beginning, one of the things I really REALLY love about it is the long battery life, it's supposed to be 50 hours, while I don't have stats on my real use, I can say that at the most, I charge it every couple of weeks.

I am still a caretaker, but only have one lady now, I randomly get called for/about other people, but it's just the one that I am taking care of more or less full time.

I am still living off grid of course, and loving every minute of it. We have been living off grid for 7 years now and I can't imagine living any other way. Last night I had a nightmare, I dreamed that we moved back to Dallas, PB was building a home in a semi-affluent neighborhood, I was crying and begging him to move back here, I couldn't imagine how we would live in a big town, how would we afford it? What would we do? What about the property in west Texas? I am sooooo glad it was just a dream!

One thing I have been doing is Zentangle or doodling, it might not sound like much, but it's very fun, I did a set of Christmas cards for my closest friends, many of them attended a class I taught on zendoodling, I am not a certified Zentangle teacher so I had to teach zendoodle :)

Here is one of the cards, you can see the rest of them here http://westtexasdoodleblog.blogspot.com/2013/12/christmas-cards-2013-doodle-17-35.html

This was part of my "spend less money DIY Christmas" thing, I'd say it was successful. I'm even thinking of starting soon on making cards to sell for next year, and even making other kinds of cards, birthday, thank you, get well/sympathy, inspirational...

I have been busy testing out some off grid goodies, I'll write more about those later (teaser!).

PB's family came out for Thanksgiving, it was the first time we had guests stay over when it was really cold, it was quite a lot of fun, the day they arrived, we had just had a major ice storm and the neighborhood had lost power, of course we still had power, but no internet, that lasted a couple of days. We kept everyone warm with a propane heater that came out of an old RV, it worked pretty well, though it did suck up the propane, I'm glad it was only for a few days.

Zoe and Casper are doing well, we finally found out what Casper was, his mom was a lhasa apso and his dad was a basset hound, that certainly explains a LOT about him! All good things.

It's been very busy this month, today is the first day I've been able to slow down, we had our annual Christmas eve program at church, we have 2 churches in our neighborhood, we take turns doing Christmas and Easter programs, next year will be our church's turn, it's quite fun, but a LOT of work getting ready, especially for those of us in the choir. It turned out really great though, it was fun to see all the people.

PB is doing well, right now he is out on the deck fabricating a grill for me, we have been grilling outside and have decided we love it, but buying charcoal is expensive and it's messy, so we can use propane or a combination of propane to start a wood or charcoal file, we do hamburgers mostly, but having a better setup, I'll be able to grill other things as well.

That's about it for now, I hope everyone has a great Christmas, I know we are, God has blessed us greatly! :)

Quickie Update on the MP3 Player

A quickie note about my new mp3 player, I'm still getting used to it, the physical size of the unit is great, the storage size is good for me, the interface is taking some getting used to, it's not as intuitive as I think it should be, either that or I'm just used to my old Coby... the text on the screen is tiny, I can barely read it without glasses, a bit of a problem when I listen to it at night in bed, I suspect once I get used to the interface that will not be a problem any longer, with my old Coby I didn't have to really look at the screen to know what I was doing, I had the interface memorized and I instinctively did what I did... with this new one, well I'm sure once I use it enough my fingers will learn what to do without having to really look at it so much.

I do like the fact that the battery lasts so long, I haven't even begun to put a dent in the first charging. It also functions pretty well as a voice recorder, last Sunday in church I used it to record the sermon, I also used my laptop, the laptop had better sound quality, but there was nothing wrong with what was recorded on the mp3 player.

Replacing Failing Equipment

My MP3 player started going out on me the other night, not on dates, it was about to fail... I seem to go through one about every 1.5 to 2 years. I can hear at least one person groaning about me living off grid with all these gadgets... yup I do live off grid and yup, I do like my gadgets. I have given up quite a lot of modern conveniences, such as TV, landline phones, cell phones, smart phones, full size desktop computer, most appliances that people can't seem to live without like a flush toilet, OK a toilet isn't considered an appliance, but you get the idea... I fell in love with the fact that I could listen to podcasts and audiobooks while doing other things, like working (on the job as well as doing chores)... so groan if you must, but please do it quietly. :)

The part that seems to fail on me is where the earbuds plug into the unit, it seems to develop a short, it will at first seem like the earbuds are not working anymore, if I move the earbud wire the sound will get better and worse. When I get out another earbud that I know works and it still does the same thing, that's when I know it's the player with the problem. I would normally take something like this apart to see if I can fix it, but this particular player doesn't have screws or any obvious way to disassemble it, it's not meant to be fixed.

They don't make the one I really like anymore, it was made by Coby, was fairly inexpensive and did everything I needed it to do, including having 16 GB of space, more than enough for the little bit of music I play, but more importantly, the audiobooks and podcasts I enjoy. I can listen while doing other things, I don't really have time to dedicate to reading anymore, with the audiobooks and podcasts, I get my books, interviews and such and can still do the things I need to do.

So since I can't get my old standby anymore, I went with Sony this time, it apparently has all the features my Coby had, but it has a ton more battery time, my Coby had 8 hours playing time, of course that goes down with time, I probably had to recharge it every couple of days with moderate use, with heavy use, nearly every day, yes I listen to it that much :)

I want to thank those of you who make your Amazon purchases through my blog, your support helped me to pay for this replacement MP3 player.

Here is the one I purchased

Product Features

  • Digital music, video & photo player with FM radio
  • It has 2-Inch QVGA (320x240) highbrightness, color LCD
  • Rechargeable battery with up to 50 hours audio playback
  • Formats Supported Audio: MP3 / WMA / AAC-LC / L-PCM, Video: MP4 / WMV, Photo: JPEG, Text: Lyric (.lrc)

Technical Details

  • Brand Name: Sony
  • Model: NWZE465BLK
  • Digital Storage Capacity: 16 GB
  • Color Name: Black
  • Battery Average Life: 50 Hours
  • Display: LCD
  • Display Size: 2 inches
  • Weight: 0.20 pounds

The 50 hours of audio playback was what really sold me, that and the 16GB size, that might not seem like much to you tablet and smart phone users out there, but I didn't want or need all the bells and whistles, I just needed something that would play music, audiobooks and podcasts.

Another thing that was important to me is the ability to create folders, I put different music and whole albums in different folders, each audiobook get it's own folder since there are usually multiple files for one audiobook, I don't want those files getting mixed up with the music or other audio files. Bookmarking is also important, if I'm listening to a song, it doesn't matter where it picks up again, but if I'm listening to an audiobook or podcast, if I stop the player, I need it to pick up right where I stopped, I believe most players will do that now. I still have a working MP3 player that wouldn't do folders or bookmarking, it worked for me but the limitations were really hard, I had to rename each and every file with a number in the beginning of the file name to put them in numerical order so they would play in the order I needed, again with music it didn't matter, but for audiobooks and podcasts, it made a huge difference. That old player still works but the battery is low, it doesn't last more than an hour. When I first got it though, it was the bees knees. :)

So I'm sitting here now, charging up this player, I have high hopes for it, I've read really good reviews, it charges fully at about 3 hours, I'll let it fully charge up, copy some Coast to Coast and some Chuck Missler to it and give it a run for its money. I'll probably put some music on it too, after all that's what it was made for.

I'll post an update in a few days and let everyone know how well it works.

A Few Pix On The Way Home

I took a few pictures today on my way home from working as a caretaker...these are in my neighborhood, it was late in the evening but there was just enough light for me to snag a few pix of beauty...

The view...
Road going home...

The "plug"
The west end of my mountain

The west end of my mountain

The west end of my mountain

The sky castle

RaggMopp (aka Casper), happy to see me,
he ran down the hill to greet me,
he always has that smile on his face

He got a haircut a few days back,
mostly on the under side and legs,
he's a much happier (and cooler) dog

The sky castle

The sky castle

Up close and personal

Doodling Around...

Ever hear of Zentangles? No? I'll bet you doodled as a kid, remember having to put paper covers on your school books? Didn't you draw designs on them? If you did, then you will understand Zentangles, it's the next step in doodling.

I have started doing this as a quick and cheap hobby, it's something I can do while waiting in the various waiting rooms I end up in when I take my ladies to their dr appts, next time I'm in town I am going to look for a small journal or art pad and some various sized ink pens/markers/liners.
Added 5-19-13:
You can find my doodles here:
http://WestTexasDoodleBlog.blogspot.com/

I'm not into scrapbooking, but I know many who are, this would pair very well with scrapbooking, you can create frames for your pictures or just add interest to the page. This is something that is very portable, you can take a small unlined notepad or artbook with you and a couple of pens, I'm thinking one of those double ended Sharpie markers (thin one one end, thick on the other) and you can do this while standing in line at the pharmacy, while in the waiting room of any office, sitting in the car waiting for the kids to get out of school... what a great way to relax and be creative at the same time.

To do this, the supplies are simple, a pen and paper, that's it! Of course, you can really go crazy on this and get more supplies, more pens (thick and thin lines, different colors), fun paper (textured, smooth, large, small, colored or white...), you can even color your doodles with markers, colored pencils, crayons, watercolor... it's up to you how far you want to go with this fun craft!

Here are some creations, they may look complex, but in reality they are very simple, done in step by step fashion, anyone can do these, you can click on each image and it will take you to the website where these images live. These are not my doodles.

There are so many Zentangle or Zendoodle images, it's mind boggling! I am drawn (pun intended) to the ones with shading, the ones that appear to have depth, I also like the ones that are colored in.
You can't draw you say? It doesn't matter, there are few rules here, and there are no mistakes, if you can scribble, you can do this! Here are a few videos demonstrating how it's done:

There are some great Zentangle books out there for those of you who are interested and want to take it to the next step:

What do you think? Have you ever done this before? Is this something you would like to do???

Freezer Fridge Conversion

Have you ever been certain that you did something only to discover that you, in fact, did not do it??? Well, this is one of those cases... I was certain I had posted an article about my freezer-fridge conversion, but when I did a search for it, nothing came up, oops! So here it is:

Living off grid, I get questions from time to time, mainly about how we live, some even think we must live in a cave and eat dirt and wear skins…  I said I live off grid, but we don’t live that primitively! :) I do enjoy some of the modern conveniences of life, including having a place to keep perishable foods, aka a refrigerator.

When we first moved off grid, in Dec ’07, we brought with us a small, dorm sized fridge, but honestly we didn’t use it much, only plugging it up on the occasions when I brought home a gallon of milk or a pound of ground beef, once the perishable food was gone, we unplugged the fridge. What I quickly found out was the standard type of fridge used up a LOT of power and they tend to be very inefficient.

I kept reading about these smart off gridders who used a chest freezer to make a refrigerator, how can that be? Turns out that it is very simple, so simple even primitive off gridder could do it. Here is what you need:

One small chest freezer. Why a chest freezer you ask? It’s simple physics, cold air sinks to the ground, that’s what is wrong with front opening fridges (and freezers), when you open the door on a front opening unit, all the cold air drops to your feet, feels good in summer, but it’s terribly inefficient, the unit now has to work harder to cool the inside again, once you quit gaping into the open door and close it. :)

Also the freezers have more insulation than refrigerators. Next you need an external thermostat, this is easily purchased online, I use this one. I like the manual, analog, non-digital one, the reason is those do not need extra power to run, no extra batteries inside the unit itself. These will have a small box with the thermostat workings inside and a dial on the outside, a copper bulb on a long thin copper wire and the plug.  The paper behind the thermostat is the instructions that came with it, we found it easiest to attach it to the wall along with the thermostat so they never get lost.

Once you have these two items, you pick out the best spot for your freezer-fridge unit, hereafter referred to as the fridge. You set the external thermostat, I keep mine at 35° F. Carefully unwind the copper coil (you don’t want to kink or break it), slip the bulb into the fridge box, if yours comes with a drain hole, that is a good spot to insert it, mine didn’t so I just placed mine through the back of the box between the box and lid, the copper wire is thin so it doesn’t interfere with the door. The bulb is where it measures temperature, I placed mine about 6 inches (+/-) from the bottom, you don’t want it fully on the bottom or at the top of the fridge, I’ve read that it shouldn’t be touching the side of the box either, but I don’t know a good way to get it to be fully separate from the wall either, it hasn’t been an issue for me.

Plug the fridge into the back of the plug on the thermostat plug, then plug that into power, close the door on the fridge and wait at least a half an hour, up to an hour. The unit will run for at least a half hour, cycle off, then on again a few more times. After the fridge comes to the temp you set on the external thermostat, that will cut off the power to the fridge. Mine runs a couple of times an hour for about 5 minutes at a time, and I’ve checked the inner temp of the box, it keeps everything at or near the 35° F I set.

Now you insert food. That isn’t as easy as it sounds, this is a box you are filling from the top, no pretty shelves to hold your food. :(
The remedy is simple. Plastic baskets. Since your fridge might be a different size than mine, I suggest you measure yours to see what will fit. I use 2 larger and 2 smaller baskets. The smaller ones go in the bottom of the unit, the larger ones go on the “step” inside unit. I put the less often used food items in the lower baskets and the more often used items in the upper baskets. Yes you will have to remove the baskets to get to the lower foods, but that is a small price to pay, don’t you think?

I just cleaned mine out the other day, so I’ll let you see inside of it :)
I put the smaller baskets on the very bottom (at the right), with the foods I access less often.  There are 2 smaller baskets for the bottom space.

The larger baskets go on the top (at the left), two stacked up, with the less often access foods on the bottom and the more often accessed foods on the top.

Oh one thing to remember, I never put raw meat on top of other foods, I put raw meat inside of a zip baggie, place that on a plate or a bowl and put it in such a way that it can’t possibly drip down onto any other foods.
I do have to remove everything about once a month and clean the whole thing, mainly because of the water condensing on the inside. Even in our very dry area, there is still a certain amount of moisture or humidity in the air, each time I open the box, more moisture gets in, it condenses on the sides and rolls down to the bottom. I tried putting a towel in the bottom to soak up the moisture between cleanings. That was a big mistake, it became a stinky bacteria mat, trust me, it’s better for the water to sit in the bottom until it’s time to clean it out, besides it’s always a good idea to dig out all of the food, since I can’t see everything in the baskets, it’s amazing how many food items that get buried and forgotten about, out of sight, out of mind… I merely remove the baskets, check the food to see if something needs to go away or possibly just be repackaged, I clean the baskets with soap and water, I wipe out the water in the bottom of the fridge, I wipe down the sides and bottom of the inside of the unit with either a weak bleach and water solution or vinegar and water. I place the foods back in the baskets and place the baskets back in the fridge.

With the super insulation value in the freezer box, it even keeps my food cold on those few times when I use up too much power playing on the internet during cloudy days and run out of power, my fridge keeps my food cold overnight until the sun shines the following day and charges my batteries back up.
You could also do this even if you aren’t living off grid but just want a more efficient way to store your perishable foods, this will certainly cost less to run meaning more $$$s in your pocket each month.

Secret Road Trip

We did a secret run yesterday, and yes PB went with me! We found out last week that PB's mom was going to be passing within 100 miles of us and spending the night, they were on their way to a gem and mineral show in another state. So on a real whim, we decided to go meet them. So yesterday afternoon we jumped into the truck, and drove to Pecos.

The restaurant was not hard to find, it was right off the highway, the ladies were already there, it was quite a nice dinner, my MIL's friends were delightful ladies, I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with them. It was nice to see PB talking to his mom, sharing old pictures, we went to their room after dinner and looked at pictures on my laptop. It was so good to see and hug my MIL, she is quite the interesting and nice lady.

Oh and lest I forget, we brought Zoe, it was quite a long road trip for her, she hasn't done very well on any car trips, she gets very upset and does something she never does any other time, she drools, a LOT. We brought a towel along and we were glad we did it. Fortunately she doesn't seem to get car sick, she just doesn't like going in the car, I think it's because in the past, that meant going to a new home. On the way out, she wasn't too bad, she sat between us but was clearly not happy. She would have been much less happy if we had left her at home.

We did have to leave her in the truck while we ate, PB went out and checked on her, she did very well alone in the truck, no barking, no crying, no howling, no destructive behavior... on the way home she calmed down quite a bit, no drooling, and she was interested in the things around her in the truck, so I think she is going to do good on future road trips, including short ones to visit friends.

Little Zoe, Not So Little Anymore...

Little Zoe, she is our little rescue dog, we have had her since early last spring, in the beginning I didn't know if she would work out for us, I really REALLY wanted another long hair chihuahua, a lapdog, a little baby I could carry around and love. Zoe was everything I didn't want in a dog, I didn't want a terrier, docked tail, too big to be a lapdog, but she has really filled an empty spot we had in our home after our little Pekoe passed away.

She is really learning what we want from her, we are still working on "come here", it works a little more than half the time, but in the beginning it never worked at all, so in that respect she has come a LONG way. Walking on a leash has also gotten better, in the beginning she would run out the full length of the leash and almost yank my arm off, now she runs the full length of the leash and stops, turns to look at me as if to say, "come on, hurry up!" I would love to be able to take her out off the leash, but she's still too unpredictable, and she runs FAST, even with those short little legs, she can gallop away in no time flat, especially if she sees another critter. I have been practicing with her by taking her off the leash when we are almost to the sky castle, I tell her "let's go home" or "go to the house", she understands what that means and runs right home and up the stairs.

She is getting better about sleeping with us, in the beginning she would not get under the blanket, and she would only sleep at our feet, now she comes up and lays her head on the pillow, she snuggles close, I jokingly told her that she had until this coming spring to become more of a snuggle dog or I would bring home a long hair chihuahua, I guess she heard me loud and clear. :)

So today, I'm on the computer, PB got up super early this morning so he went in and is taking a nap, Zoe is laying between his legs with her head between his boots. I grabbed the camera and snapped a few cute pix, I couldn't resist.

Snow, Beans & Cornbread

This has been a stay at home week, we had snow, lots of it for us, at least a foot deep... a lot of is has melted off, but now I can't get off of my road, I tried to go out yesterday, but I never made it past the first hill, I got a quarter of the way up and came to a stop, oh my wheels were turning, but I wasn't going anywhere. It wasn't because of the snow either, most of it has melted off, but the roads are now mushy clay, even those with 4 wheel drive are getting stuck here and there.

So today I decided it would be a good day for a pot of beans, I meant to start these soaking last night but I went to bed early and it never happened. So today I picked and cleaned the beans, put them in the pressure cooker with plain water, brought them up to pressure then turned them off. When the pressure let off on its own, I opened the pot, poured the beans into a colander and rinsed them, returned the beans to the pot and added 1 can of Campbells French onion soup and a large can of beef stock, I added some oil and hot & mild chili powder, then started the beans cooking again.

So what goes better with beans than cornbread? I quickly realized I didn't have any cornmeal, I don't often use it and only buy it when I have a purpose for it, I began looking around for something, anything I could use to substitute for cornmeal, I have masa, but I didn't think that would work very well, I even eyeballed a bag of corn chips... then I remembered I had a #10 can of freeze dried corn, I have ground up popcorn before to make cornbread and it worked pretty well, I figured the freeze dried corn would work at least as well.

I don't follow a recipe to make cornbread, I just take 1 cup cornmeal, 1 cup flour, some baking powder, some salt, sugar (I like my cornbread sweet), an egg, some oil and enough milk to turn it into a batter, pour it into a greased pan and cook it until it's done.

So I opened the can of freeze dried corn, I measured out a little more than a cup, put it into a heavy duty zipper baggie, I used a rolling pin to crush the corn, freeze dried corn is very easy to crush, it came out to just about a cup of crushed corn, I used it along with the rest of the ingredients and baked it in the oven. I did omit the sugar on this one, I tasted the corn and the batter, it turns out that freeze dried corn is very sweet on its own.

Well, I have to say that the cornbread turned out great! The texture is just a little finer than regular cornbread, other than that, you would never know it started out as freeze dried corn! Oh and the beans turned out pretty good too. :)

Scratching That Itch

Have I told you? I have this itch, and sometimes it gets really bad, I've had it most of my life, at least as early as I can remember... sometimes it goes away for a while, but it always returns, and here lately it's been pretty bad...

What is this issue? Well, it's art, I have really wanted to get back into drawing, a while back I purchased a big box of crayons, yes the ones that kids use :)

I have, in the past, used crayons to draw what would be considered "fine art", ie it wasn't kids stuff, and it has turned out pretty well if I do say so myself. I would like to start working on some "local" art, subject matter of the local area, cactus, local wildlife and such. Yesterday and today I worked on a lion face, I know that African lions are not a local animal for me, I just love their look and have drawn them before using crayon. Here is the picture I just worked on, you can click on it to make it large:

Sorry about the watermark, I don't expect this picture will go viral and people will probably not print it out and sell these as original artworks (LOL), but perhaps someday if I get really good, well who knows. :) Let's just say I'm covering my posterior just in case. I'm not sure if I am done with it or not, I might go back in and tweak it more, I'd like to add more darks to the picture.

I have been following some crayon artists, those who really do "fine art" using crayons, they somehow manage to get richer colors and darker darks. I'm beginning to figure out how they are doing it, using another medium like ink (pen and ink or markers) or perhaps watercolor for the black, but some of them say they used only crayons, so I just don't know for sure... here are some links to their works:

http://www.themastercrayonartist.com

http://www.jeffreyrobert.com/

If I read it right, the second one is the son of the first one, they are both fantastic artists!
