Serrapeptase?

OK, I tried the selenium one more time, I really want to take this. I waited a few days for my innards to get back to normal, then tried taking one drop instead of 3. Day one was fine, day two was fine, day three was not fine, I had the same gut busting gas and other stuff, not quite as severe, but still had it. It has been suggested that I might be having a herx reaction and it is causing me to have a cleanse (the hard way)... well I'm thinking now I will try taking it once or twice a week, one drop which would be about 33mcg, that is well below the FDA recommended daily dose. If I have the same reaction, then I guess that is not for me. :(

Now to the newest supplement I'm taking... it's called serrapeptase, haven't heard of it? Neither had I. But it's not new, in fact it's been in use for 30+ years in Europe, apparently even the doctors over there prescribe it for their patients. Let me tell you what it does first, then I'll tell you what it is.

This is an enzyme, it dissolves dead organic tissue, which can be blood clots, arterial plaque, fibroids, scar tissue, just about anything that can be found inside the body that causes problems. There is a whole laundry list of diseases and disorders it helps, from arthritis, MS, neuropathy, inflammation, pain, one lady in a review said it got rid of the floaters in her eyes. I haven't even scratched the surface on what people and those in the medical field say it can do... I would consider this "too good to be true" except for all the great reviews I'm reading about it and the fact that it has been in use for so long in Europe. And for what it's worth, it is given to animals too.

Now, to what it is made of/from... it is an enzyme found in silk worms, this is how they dissolve the cocoon when its time for them to emerge. I am still trying to figure out who figured this out! Who in their right mind would think of eating something that comes from the innards of a worm is beyond me. :) But I'm glad someone discovered this.

This isn't measured in milligrams or micrograms,  it's measured in units, active units, the one I'm taking is 40,000 units per pill (not horse pills either). I am on my third day, I've been taking 2 pills first thing in the morning, this has to be taken on an empty stomach, it needs to pass through your stomach quickly and get into your small intestines to work, apparently food blocks it from working or slows it down so that it dissolves in your stomach and causes it not to work. I've been told that I should start off taking this 3X a day for a while then back off to 1-2X a day. So far I have had no negative effects from it, but after the selenium reaction, I'm being more careful about starting new things, fortunately I don't tend to have a delicate constitution, I don't generally react to things in a negative way.

The reason I'm taking this is because of pain, I'm having pain in my left, upper arm, the bicep to be exact, I am having trouble raising my arm (I feel for you Dad!), this has been going on for quite some time now, many months, I don't recall injuring myself, but apparently something is going on in there. Just normal everyday movements don't hurt, it feels fine when I'm not using it, but anything I do where I have to lift my arm above my shoulder height, with or without weight is painful, not excruciating, but enough that I know about it. Also anytime I reach backward, that hurts worse, my arm is becoming noticeably weaker, I can't allow this to continue. This feels more like the joint or tendon rather than muscle but I can't be 100% sure of that. I do know that I can't even lay on the bed and put my left arm above my head, even in a relaxed position, it hurts quite a bit, enough to make me put my arm back down.

There is one possibility of how I injured it, last year I apparently slept on that arm too long, when I woke up that arm was dead from the shoulder down, this wasn't just the pins and needles kind of dead either, it was scary dead, like it was going to turn black and fall off... the feeling did eventually come back but it has never felt the same since. I suspect I may have semi-permanently damaged it when I did that. I do my best to not sleep on one side or the other for too long... ohhhh, getting older is no picnic. :) Whine whine, grumble grumble...

I do not want to start taking aspirin, acetaminophen or other pain killers, they are either hard on your stomach, liver or kidneys, and eventually they stop working as well so you have to up the dose or go on to stronger pain killers. So I am giving serrapeptase a go. I'm also going to get PB on this, the hard part will be finding a time when he's not drinking coffee (with sugar and non-dairy creamer). He has agreed to try it though, I just have to be faster than he is in the mornings :)

Reading the reviews on Amazon. I determined that the brand everyone seems to like best is called Doctor's Best. It's fairly inexpensive too (woot!). And according to what I have read, I should know before I finish this bottle if it's going to work for me or not. Of course there are some people who aren't improved by taking this, but the vast majority have improvements and continue to take it. I'm hoping to be in that group.

What supplements do you take, why and do they work for you?

Periogen Review

I am finally ready to give Periogen a final review (though there may be followups in the future), I must say that I am very happy with it, it does what it says it does, it is removing the tartar from my teeth.

Living off grid and making very little money, dental and health insurance is pretty much out of the question, so being proactive about my dental health is something that has really become something important to me. I know that many health issues are directly influenced by the state of your dental health, mainly from bacteria and infections that might be simmering just below the surface.

You can read about my dental history, or you can scroll down to the review.

My dental history:
Growing up, no one of my family went to dentists, it was just too expensive. We must have had pretty good teeth though, none of us had any dental problems or emergencies. When I was 16 years old, we were unceremoniously taken to the dentist for the first time. I have to say, that dentist had a terrible bedside manner, this was my FIRST trip to the dentist, of course I had a tartar buildup, he decided the best thing to do was deride me about it, making rude comments and making me feel very bad. Needless to say, it was many years before I went back to another dentist.

As an adult I decided I needed braces, I had very crooked teeth and knew if I wanted to take better care of them, they needed to be straight, and of course there was a bit of vanity in there too, I wanted to smile without feeling self conscious. Well, 5 years and many many many hundreds and thousands of dollars later, I had straight and healthy teeth.

I loved going to the dentist, not to see my dentist though, I had a great hygienist named Beverly, she really knew me and my mouth. All too soon though, she moved away and I just wasn’t happy with anyone else. No one would spend the time she did, no one would baby me like she did, and I need babying when it comes to my teeth and mouth, I tend to be a major wimp about my mouth. I eventually stopped going to the dentist all together.

Move ahead 15 years and even though I still have pretty good teeth, but I had a major buildup of tartar, I knew this wasn’t a good thing, I worked on it myself from time to time with dental picks but that only got some of the worst buildup, it didn’t do a thing for what was below the gum line and between my teeth. I started looking for products that might help remove tartar, I had even looked at some of those tartar removers for dogs, yes I was that desperate. I know I should go to a dentist, but I already know what they will want to do, they will want to scale my teeth, possibly even doing gum surgery, well that is a no-go for me, both financially and health wise, I know that will release a LOT of toxins into my body and I just don’t want to go there.

Periogen review:
I found one, and only one product that promised to remove tartar, both above the gum and below. It’s called Periogen. I read the reviews on Amazon and most of them were positive, it seems that the few negative ones were people who didn’t use it long enough for it to work properly, they thought they would see big chunks of tartar falling from their mouth, or they complained about the price of Periogen. I will address both of these further down.

I decided I wanted to give this a try, I had been in contact with the Periogen company through Amazon as a result of asking questions on the reviews there, I asked John at Periogen if I could do a trial of the product and give it a review, I did want to try it and would have purchased it if I had been turned down. Much to my delight, John replied and said yes, I could do a trial for review, he sent me 2 bottles (I was only expecting one) and I immediately started using it.

The best way to use Periogen is to brush your teeth first, use any dental products you normally use, then use Periogen last, John suggested that I use it last thing at night before going to bed. You can use Periogen by swishing it in your mouth, but if you really want the best results, use an oral irrigator, the one they recommend is by WaterPik, there is a link below to the right one. I already had another brand of oral irrigator and it works just fine for me. You add one scoop of Periogen per half cup of warm water, each bottle has a scoop included. The product fizzes up quite a bit then calms down, after brushing I use the irrigator to spray the Periogen water on my gums and teeth, paying particular attention to the spots where there is more tartar, I also hold some of the Periogen water in my mouth and swish it around, I just wanted to make sure I got the most out of the product. The first night I used it was fairly uneventful, my teeth did feel cleaner, almost squeaky, but no magic was happening, yet…

As far as the taste, it has a light citrus flavor, nothing to write home about, it's not bad at all, I don't mind the flavor, I even look forward to the citrus flavor, that's how I know I have enough Periogen in the water.

I used it for 2 weeks, in all honesty I didn’t use it every night, maybe 4X a week, and as is typical of myself, I couldn’t leave well enough alone, I did use a dental pick to work on the visible tartar, mainly what was on the back of my lower front teeth. What I did notice almost right away was the tartar came off much easier, and the stuff I normally couldn’t remove because it wasn’t thick enough to get a good “bite” with the pick, this was more easily scraped away.

By the third week, that’s when I noticed the magic! I was flossing (something else I’m bad about not doing as often as I should), as I moved the floss between my back teeth (molars) the floss slid in and out with no resistance, normally the floss would end up shredded by the roughness of the tartar buildup between my teeth, this time, there was more space and the floss slid easily in and out. Now I knew the Periogen was truly working, there was no way I could have gotten my dental pick between my back molars, this was strictly the Periogen working!
Before Periogen (not my teeth)

After Periogen about 8 weeks after
I have 2 lower front teeth where I have pretty severe receding gums, a couple of weeks ago I irritated those two teeth by eating some chicken strips, my gums swelled quite a bit, there was infection and the accompanying pressure and pain. I continued using Periogen and another product called Calcium Therapy (I'll do a review on that soon), it took about a week but the problem did resolve itself, I noticed a few days ago that the gums were growing back, one tooth is better than the other, but there is definitely a major difference, I am very happy to see that, these are the two worst teeth in my mouth and the ones I worried most about losing.

Now to answer the negative reviews on Amazon about Periogen, first the fact that it didn’t work on the first few uses. I will tell you that the tartar didn’t build up overnight, and using Periogen (as opposed to physical scraping) you aren’t going to remove it overnight, you will have to use it more than a couple of times to notice it working. It does work though, and faster than I expected, within 2-3 weeks I it was making a significant difference in the tartar on my teeth, I had a bad buildup and I didn’t use it every night as I should have, if I had used it every night, I know it would have worked even faster.

Now to the second concern I read, the price, a bottle of Periogen is $29.95 with free shipping, (price as of the time I am writing this), used properly that should last about 45 days. You should be able to tell it’s working within 2 weeks. Periogen has a money back guarantee, so you aren’t going to lose out by trying Periogen. I look at it like this, if I go to a dentist just for a routine cleaning and checkup, the average cost is going to be at least $100, if you don’t have a tartar on your teeth then you probably don’t need this product, but if you have more than just a small buildup of tartar (like I did) then you are going to spend lots more than that for deep cleaning, scaling, you are looking at $100-$400 per quadrant, all of a sudden that bottle of Periogen @ $29.95 for a 45 day supply isn’t looking so expensive after all. I certainly don’t mind spending 30 bills on a product that actually does what it claims to do.

Bottom line, if you are living like I do, on very little money, far from the nearest dentist, and you want to maintain your dental health or even turn a bad dental situation around, or you are looking to fill out your emergency medical bag for the time when things might go really bad and services like dental care isn’t available (temporarily or permanently), then I would recommend getting a bottle or two of Periogen, I am very happy with my results and will be buying more.

Dental Update

Well, I've been using the Periogen for 2 weeks and a few days, nearly 2 and a half weeks. I have not used it everyday, I really am my own worst enemy about doing things consistently for myself. But I can say that I use it more often than not, 4 or more times per week. I've been making it a bit stronger using 1 and 1/2 to 2 scoops each time (which is well within the usage directions), I'm using it with the Interplak WJ6RW Dental Water Jet using the Subgingival Tip, this is an angled soft tip that I can push into my gums, it really gets the Periogen deep into my gums.

OK, here is what has been happening, as I said before, I can't leave well enough alone, several times a week I grab a mirror, a loop and a dental pick, I get up close and personal with my tartar, something I have done before, but now the tartar is different, it's even a different color (lighter in color), and more brittle, it's as if it's not attached to my teeth the same way as it was before, it's much MUCH easier to scrape off. In the past, I've been able to remove the larger chunks that build up on the inside of my bottom teeth, but I've never been able to remove the thinner layers that are between my teeth and on the gum line. Now I am able to remove it, quite easily. I tend to work on one or two teeth at a time, I don't want to mess up or do damage, I also don't want to release too much toxins, you know when you go to the dentist even to just get a cleaning, they will often prescribe antibiotics, that's because when they are working on your teeth, they are releasing lots of toxins into your body and you need to be able to fight it. So I take it slow, not doing too much at any one time.

I have noticed that if I try to work on the tartar BEFORE using the Periogen, the tartar is hard and doesn't want to let go, but after I use the Periogen, it really does change the tartar, making it easier to remove. I am really happy with how this stuff is working. :)

Tonight, I really worked to clean my teeth extra well before using the Periogen. I flossed (something I don't regularly do) and I also used one of those skinny brushes that go between your teeth called a interdental brush. I noticed immediately that flossing was much easier, before this time, I often had to force the floss to go between many of my teeth, and often the floss would shred because of roughness of the tartar buildup. The little brush also went between my teeth much easier than before, in fact there had been some of my teeth where I couldn't get one of those brushes to go in, tonight I was able to easily get the brush in between all of my teeth and it went quite easily. That is telling me that the tartar is going away, there is more space between my teeth that hadn't been there before, it had been filled with tartar, and now it's going away.

I have to say that if I had been using the Periogen everyday as I am supposed to, I know that even more tartar would be gone. I'll continue using it and report more about it in the coming days and weeks.

Second Part of the Dental One-Two Punch

I have been teasing you with the other part of my one-two punch dental plan, this is actually what got me started on this. I listen to and follow several alternative health podcast websites, one of them is called OneRadioNetwork, I get an email a couple of times a week letting me know who they are interviewing next. I am especially interested in the dental shows, I have learned that the silver amalgams that used to be used to fill cavities (I HOPE they aren't using those any more!) are very toxic and unfortunately, I have several of these in my mouth. I have also learned that drill and fill are not the "be all-end all" of dental treatments. I have learned that it is possible to remineralize your teeth, and actually reverse cavities, I don't know if you can do that for large cavities, but certainly for the smaller ones.

I listened to a podcast interview of Dr. Mark Manhart, DDS, he has been a practicing dentist since 1962, he believes in and practices healing rather than the barbaric methods used today. His secret? Calcium and zinc.
You can listen to the audio podcast here or click on the link above to go directly to the page and listen, it's just under an hour, I believe you will get a lot from it.
Download
This is what really piqued my interest, I like the idea of non-surgical dental therapy. I purchased the Calcium/zinc kit and the Calcium Carpule System. I'll explain more about each of these in a follow up post, for now let's just say that the prices for these products were in the very inexpensive range, if they work as advertised, they are well worth twice the price.

I have learned that in order to remineralize or rebuild the enamel on your teeth, there are some very common dental product ingredients that you need to avoid, this will actually prevent remineralization, namely glycerin, it's an ingredient in many dental products, toothpaste, rinses and such, glycerin coats your teeth and prevents remineralization, it stays on your teeth for a while after using it, I've read it can take up to 20 rinses to remove this glycerin layer. Just do a search for this and you will learn more than you ever wanted to know about it

Before considering using anything on my teeth or in my mouth, I read the ingredients, if it contains glycerin, I put it back on the shelf, period. It's not worth it to me to use something that will coat my teeth and prevent my teeth from remineralizing naturally.  I've been doing this for a number of years, while I haven't been to a dentist in many years, I don't believe I have any cavities, or if I do, they are small, I believe one of the reasons is that I stopped using anything containing glycerin. I also don't use fluoride,  it is a well known toxic waste product and it is not needed, for the record Periogen does contain a small amount of fluoride, a very tiny amount, it is used in the process of removing the tartar, not for "strengthening" teeth, I am willing to use it for now. Their website says:
Question
Periogen has fluoride; how much?  Why?
Answer
Periogen contains a small percentage of sodium fluoride ions (.04%) in order to have a guaranteed ion source to facilitate tartar dissolution.  Typical fluoride toothpastes contain about .24% sodium fluoride, or 6 times as much.

you can read more about that here:
http://www.periogen.com/pages/faq.html

So here it is, my one-two punch on dental health care, I'm trying both of them now, one to remove tartar and the other to heal my teeth and gums. I'll keep you informed as to how these are working for me. What I can say now, 3 days into using them is, so far so good. :)

I received 2 bottles of Periogen free of charge for the expressed intent of giving it a trial and writing about that trial here, I purchased the other dental products, this in no way influences the outcome of the trial, I will write an honest review of these dental products and expect to receive no other compensation for the trial or review.

Periogen Trial

A few weeks ago, I ran across a dental health product on Amazon, it's called Periogen Tartar Dissolving Oral Rinse, their claim is that it dissolves tartar on teeth and below the gum line. I read the reviews and for the most part there are positive reviews, like any product and the public, not everyone is going to be pleased with every product. I read one review that seemed to unfairly give Periogen a bad review, I responded to it with questions for the reviewer, mainly wanting to know if he had actually used it, or the concoction he came up to replace it... his reply was that he had tried it, but not the DIY mixture he came up with, his main complaint was the price of the product, not the efficacy of it. He also (somewhat) accused me of working for Periogen. There were a few other replies (from both of us) tossed back and forth, in the mean time I contacted John at Periogen, he was also replying to this and other reviewers, I gave him a bit of background on myself and asked if I could do a review of Periogen. ~~~EDIT it would seem that this review has been removed by the person who wrote it, not sure why, I am hoping it is because reviewer saw the logic of my questions about his review.~~~

John being the nice guy he is, promptly send not one but two bottles to me. I was very excited to receive enough Periogen to really do a test on it. Last night I tried it for the first time. I haven't been to a dentist for a cleaning in many years, I have quite a major buildup of tartar on the inside of the bottom front teeth, I have tartar on my other teeth, but not nearly as bad, I can feel it more than see it. I'm sure I have pockets in my gums, though I don't have a dentist telling this to me.

Periogen recommends that you use a WaterPik with their product to get the product deep between the teeth and into any pockets in the gums. I previously purchased an Interplak WJ6RW Dental Water Jet at a local store, it was a great deal and too good to pass up. This one has the Subgingival Tip meant to really get into the pockets. I put a scoopful of Periogen into warm water in the water container, it fizzed up quite a bit, then I turned on the unit and began flooding my gums, every once in a while I would allow some of the Periogen water to build up in my mouth and I swished it around for about 30 seconds, spit it out then continued spraying the Periogen water on the rest of my mouth/gums. I will say that my teeth felt cleaner than they had before, my molars actually squeaked when they rubbed together.

I grabbed a mirror and flashlight and began to check on my teeth. I wasn't expecting miracles, Periogen says it can take a week or two to start seeing results, tartar doesn't build up overnight and you aren't going to remove it overnight (without going to a dentist). I have a dental scraper and I was able to scrape off some of the softened tartar, I have done this before (being extremely careful as I do it, I can't afford to make a mistake and have to go to the dentist to have a tooth fixed or my gums sewn back up), I noticed that there was a thin layer of tartar that was able to be scraped off. I do not recommend anyone to scrape on their own teeth, and I'm sure that Periogen doesn't recommend that either, but being who I am, I couldn't leave well enough alone, and I was pleasantly surprised to note there were some areas that seemed to be softened enough to remove myself, not the whole layer, just some pieces here and there were able to be scraped off. In the past when I've attacked my own tartar, it didn't let go easily, this time it seemed quite a bit easier to remove.

Tonight I'll use it again, I plan to use it every night, though knowing myself, I'll probably miss a night or two here and there, but I'll do my utmost best to use it each night, I'll periodically report what my findings are, probably about once a week or so, though if something drastic happens, I'll report about that sooner.

I'm also using another dental health product, I just started using this as well, I'll write more about it soon, I've been using it for a few more days than the Periogen, so far I really like it and how it's making my teeth and gums feel.. more about that later. :)

Here's the deal, I figure that there are lots of people out there like me, with a mouth full of teeth and no dental insurance, it's been so long since I've been to a dentist that I know it's going to be more than just a simple cleaning, so I've been on the hunt for dental products that do more than just clean, I want to have healing and tartar removal, it would seem that I have found both, if these products do what they claim to do, then my mouth is going to be in a healthier state, and therefore my body will also be healthier. There are proven correlations between poor dental health and the state of your body, specifically your heart and other organs. I know that having poor dental health slowly dribbles bacteria into your blood stream, these bacteria attack other parts of your body, so it's not just a case of having bad teeth and/or gums, it ends up ultimately being about life and death.  I am giving this a one-two punch, take care of my teeth & gums and removing the tartar, hopefully with the tartar gone and my teeth and gums in a healthier state, I can prolong having to get dental and/or medical treatment, I can stay healthy and active.

Each bottle of Periogen is a 45 day supply if used as instructed on the bottle, I'll use both bottles and write about my experiences as I go. I will certainly keep you, my readers informed as to the results of using both of these products, be sure to ask questions if you have them, I'll be more than happy to answer.

My Mop Came In! Review

It finally came in, no I'm not complaining about how long it took, especially since the shipping was free (it took less than a week), I just couldn't wait to get it! I used the mop yesterday, at the church where I clean and at a lady's house where I clean. I am so impressed with this mop, it works even better than my original microfiber mop. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this mop!

When I received the box from UPS (thanks Bobby! You are the best!), the box looked too small to contain this mop. I opened it and discovered the mop handle is shipped in 2 parts, there were no instructions in the box, but it was pretty simple to put the two parts together, they snap into place. In the box I found the handles, 3 microfiber mop pads, and 2 bottles, I only expected to get 1 bottle, it was a pleasant surprise to get 2 bottles. After going back to Amazon and looking closer, I discovered that you are supposed to get 2. After playing with it for a bit, I washed the pads, you need to do that with any new microfiber product, otherwise you will leave a trail of microfiber dust the first time you use it.

When I got to the church, I swept the floor in the kitchen then I got to work with the mop, I had already filled the bottle with water, up to the first line that is nearly at the top of the bottle, I put in ammonia up to the second line, which ends up being a couple of tablespoons worth. It fit right into the receptacle on the handle with no dripping. The mop is balanced pretty well, though it does weigh a little more than my original microfiber mop. I pumped the trigger on the handle a couple of times to get it going. It began spraying a near perfect rectangle of liquid on the floor just in front of the mop head, the spray pattern was about the same size as the mop pad, not too much, not too little. On the first swipe, I realized that this was working much better than my original microfiber mop, it cleans better and picks up more dirt and liquid, I attribute that to the fact that the pads are much thicker. That means I will not have to rinse the pad as often, that is something you have to do with microfiber mops, just the same as you do with any mop, after you use it so long, you have to rinse them. With this mop, since it's thicker, it doesn't require rinsing as often, and since I have 3 mop pads, I just change the pad instead of rinsing. The only place I know of that you can get the whole mop kit with the extra pads and extra bottle, is through Amazon, if you buy direct from Rubbermaid, you get the mop with one pad and one bottle, you have to pay extra for more pads and bottles, plus you pay for shipping, through Amazon you get the whole kit, mop, 3 pads and 2 bottles with free shipping, that's the best deal I have found to date.

I used it on the floor, then put on a new pad and went to the glass doors (next time I'll do the glass first, that way I can continue using the same pad on the floors), I sprayed the ammonia water on the door and mopped the doors, inside and out. They came so clean! And no streaks, it dried perfectly clear, I also used it on the sliding glass doors on the front of the church, again with near perfect results. Makes me wish there was more to mop in the church! When I left there, I went to my friend's house where I clean, there is much more to mop there. Again, it worked perfectly over there, I used the mop head that I used on the glass at the church, it was clean enough to use on the floor without rinsing beforehand. So far everyone who has seen this mop wants one, one of my friends did buy one a few days after I ordered mine, she also ordered a dust mop head for hers, I wish now that I had gotten one of those too, perhaps next time I order from Amazon, I'll order one of those.

I give this mop a big thumbs up. It works like a Swiffer mop without having to buy refills of the pads and the cleaner.

One warning, do not use chlorine bleach in any way with microfiber material, it will destroy the material, that goes for any microfiber product you are using, and when you wash them, do not use fabric softener with them, it will soak up the fabric softener and will not pick up anything else after that, in fact it will make streaks where you use it. It's OK that it has static cling, and it will when you take it from the dryer, that helps the cloths work even better when you dry dust.
